Work in Progress.

Please note I intend to get the basic text in place then add pictures and formatting (pretty colours) later.

This guide will be made up of 3 sections:
1. Building a base;
2. Defending your base;
3. Golding.

Gnoll:
Considered an easy race as they can base straight away without gold.

OK from the start ping your desired location on the map. You will be picking this South East base.

Please note: It is good practice to get into the habit of "Shift-clicking". Holding down the Shift key while issuing orders in Warcraft 3 allows you to queue up commands. It is most important in Island Defence as it allows you to build more quickly and will leave your builder less exposed to attacks, especially when you are defending your base.

Run down to the bottom left of the base and quickly build a shelter inside the square of trees. Leave a 1 space gap between the trees and the shelter. Queue up your hunter to harvest from the tree line north of this shelter. If the chicken is in the way kill it by pressing the attack command (default shortcut key is "A") and selecting the chicken. While he is building select the shelter and right click on the lower left tree in the corner. This will mean that as soon as your harvesters spawn they will start to gather wood from this area.

Your builder will have gathered 10 wood before any of your workers do. With this build another shelter just north of the existing one, be mindful to leave the 1 space gap between the shelter and the tree line. After this run to the South east corner of the base and build a fruit tree as by the time you get here your builders will have harvested enough wood.

Then run back and build 2 more shelters thus completing a 4x4 square of shelter leaving a 1 space gap surrounding them. Run back out side and build another 4 fruit trees. Please remember to build more workers using the first shelter.This will bring you up to 150 food, the maximum amount. Now build a shelter in the remaining gap of the trees, thus containing all your gatherers. To fill up your square with workers will take 120 food. Now run just to the north of the square and build one more shelter, making sure there is a 1 space gap between it and the tree line just south of it. Have two workers gather from there. These workers will eventually be detonated as you build towers to free up food.

Now run back to your entrance and start building walls. Please take note of the offset between the central 10 walls and the ones above and below it. This offset makes the titan have to destroy 1 extra row of walls before he can turn aside and work his way across your base.

Also it allows for a 1 space gap at the back of your base once your towers are all built. (This facilitates "proofing" your base. More on this later as it is situational.) The entrance to this base is 6 spaces wide. You want to build two rows of walls in the centre leaving a 1 space gap both above and below your main column of walls. This allows you to run out and repair or rebuild walls that may have been destroyed by the titan later in the game. Do not worry as the titan cannot get through as it needs 2 spaces to walk.

Now run back to the South East of the base and build your Hut and an additional fruit tree. Now this last fruit tree will not give you an extra food but we build it because we will be destroying the fruit tree at the entrance to your base.

Now you have to make a choice. We will assume for now that the titan has not found you yet and is elsewhere on the map. Is the titan attacking another base or has it been spotted on a distant part of the map? If so we will delay building towers and use the lumber to start researching lumber gathering upgrades. Do this by selecting a shelter and clicking the appropriate icon.

If while researching this and the titan attacks and you do not have enough wood to continuously build you can cancel the research and get the wood back.

If the titan is nowhere to be seen or was seen close to you or to be heading in your direction then it is time to start building towers.

Run to the North West of you base and build a single tower in the corner. Next build the second tower 3 across and 3 down. The reason we build it here is to position the builder so that he will not become trapped by building the 3rd tower. Now build the third tower.

Now you can continue building tower in a semicircle around your existing walls.

Now when you run out of food to build more towers detonate the two workers that are currently gathering wood above your main square of workers this will allow you to build all the towers that you will need for now. While you are building these towers start training your hunter Don't worry they take a while to train. Do this by clicking on your hut and selecting the appropriate icon. Please note that your last 3 towers will be built at the South east of your group of towers.

The reason for this is because there are 5 extra towers on the north side of your base due to the fact of the small out crop. Now that you have your towers destroy the shelter and fruit tree at the entrance to your base and build two more walls in their place. Congrats this is your basic Gnoll base. Once you have finished building send your builder south to gather wood, every little helps.

By the time you have completed building your towers your hunter should have spawned. Select his first skill to be Blink. This is a short range teleportation skill. Have him run up as far north as he can being blocked only by the two towers of the central columns.

Now blink up and run left. The cool-down on blink is quite long so we will start upgrading walls while waiting and then blink him into his position on the western most point of the outcrop.

Start upgrading walls starting from the outermost and working your way inwards. If the titan is attacking and working his way up your row of walls then upgrade the walls in front of him as opposed to the walls on the other row.

Once your walls have been upgraded start on your towers. you should upgrade the 5 towers closest to your Gnoll first as they have the greatest coverage of you base entrance.

Then work your way around your base upgrading the towers closest to the entrance first.

 it is more wood efficient to upgrade all your towers to Enhanced Axe towers first rather than upgrading a few to Super axe towers. Keep following this order till all your towers are upgraded.

If you haven't already select the second Lumber upgrade from your shelters as you wait for the gold penalty.

Once the gold penalty comes build your Merchant just north of your Hut

and your Advance Research Centre (ARC) in the very top right of your base.

Build your ARC here allows for another builder to build another 3x3 buiding here and facilitates "proofing".

You most important researches are in order:
1. Gatherer HP upgrade;
2. Harvester rate upgrade;
3. Wall HP upgrade.

You've put a lot information on 'how to base'.
I'd suggest dividing your information into sections because you jump into different things. From what I read most, this is mostly a early base, in which most situations are a really bad idea.

The guide would be better if there was a little bit of color, a few screenshots maybe and some more details.

And if someone else picks this base...?

We will assume for now

I think you can figure out whats wrong.

As Nexus said, I read that you suggest early basing. Which is a very bad idea. You should lumber to maybe 10,000 lumber before you base.

Of course, I'm a trained professional.

I lumbered 60K with makrura and our "pro" radioactive named Lotuspod had 23k at end game. I double based with him and he "mysteriously" disconnected after we had a base our titan couldn't breach.

Yeah bump whatever but you should mention that gnoll can't just base anywhere.  Certain areas completely fail with gnoll (like the top right troll base... eww)

I like what I've read of the guide, but that spot you picked as a lumber base is terrible as a lumber base.  If the titan is Syph, Demon or Bub they can get huge exp from those workers, and that base is a common spot which is usually checked by scouting titans.

I've killed main titan in 3 minutes with early gnoll base there. It's only a bad idea if you don't know how to deal with certain situations.

Cause you've been playing with shit titans.

Anyway, the base there is where I commonly check, so I don't recommend that place
