I was wondering.

I always type in the same way, using only 4 fingers (claw method). Do any of you guys think that it is necessary/bad/preference based to actually learn to type using all 10 fingers?
I'm seriously not sure if i should change the way i am typing right now, i am used to it and i can average an about 70-80 wpm with the claw method.

Eh, usually people only use eight of their fingers and then use the thumbs for hitting the space bar. I can see how someone could only use four fingers, especially if they're used to having one hand on the mouse usually.

As far as I can recall, I've never used my thumbs for typing ever...

Damn useless things. Gripping primitive tools and advancing our technology? Shuuuuureeee.

So you shift your entire hand to hit the space bar?

You're supposed to use your thumbs for the spacebar, and nothing else, it isn't designed for that and it would actually slow your WPM, not to mention it is a major source of carpal tunnel, and accelerates any developing carpal tunnel that is already happening very rapidly.

I commonly use my pointer finger (the one between my thumb and middle finger) on my right hand instead.

No idea why.

EDIT: I'll do a WPM test tomorrow I see how I do, haven't done one in ages...

same except that I keep them in normal position but move them to those positions (pinkies to either shift or enter) only when I need to use them..

i use the upperthumb stance for typing i actually do around 210 wpm , its a very uncommon way to type but when you get used to it you can type so fast . Its just about using your left thumb more often than normally and using that right thumb for the space.

that test blows, I naturally type sentences with correct gramatical flow much faster than I do random words jumbled together, I always try to put "to" in middle of the words "sing" and "me", I understand the concept but my development of my typing skills is designed to provide utility, so that score would actually be a bit misleading.

I average about 60-80 or so depending on how I am feeling in casual typing, I can cap at about 120 with dramatically decreasing accuracy.

This is pretty much how fast I type as well.

And I agree with Orc's statement about that site, typing an actual sentence feels a whole lot more natural since you can think about upcoming words in your head and type them without even considering their meaning.

I also assume a lot of you can type normal sentences faster than me since my typing is completely based around programming.

I usually use my eight fingers and thumb for alt with 50-60wpm.
I think touch typing is the most common n effective way of typing, generally used by professionals.

I taught myself to type when I was little. I type pretty fast and use all but my thumbs. I took a typing class in middle school and couldn't really adjust to that kind of typing, so i just stuck with what i knew.

After trying and reading a bunch fo stuff here, i think im just going to stick with the method of typing that i do have (using 2 fingers on each hand + my thumbs for space bar.
Honestly, i dont think that a 10wpm difference will ever change my life wherever i go. Evev if i go somewhere that does require a lot of typing, i think that with my efficiency that id have right now, i would be totally fine.

do you guys think it is 100% necessary for me to learn touch typing?

It's never bad to learn new things. In my school you could pay 10 euros for some stupid lessons on how to learn typing.
I wasn't there and i can typ faster than anyone of them.  laugh
'full' typing will come with time (but probably not if you keep playing sc2 or the stuff without chats, lol..)
