it depends on what you are after.
If you want a strong story, One Piece is definitly a good choice. It carries on for several hundreds of episodes with tons of twists, indepth storytelling and character development.
If you want good action, I would also suggest One Piece for that matter. Since Oda (the writer) is not using adult graphical detail, he can focus easier on the character and story which he elaborated that he is better at.
One Piece also comes with its large deal of amazingly told action. In honesty, Bleach fails compared to One Piece in action.
Bleach battle between good and bad: Good guy reveals 1 new move, the bad guy loses. Rince and repeat.
One Piece battle between good and bad: Bad guy reveals 1 new move, the bad guy deals with it and the intensity builds up.
If you want a dark story, im afraid I only know Mangas. So I cant really help you here, given that you have watched Death Note.
If you simply want something to watch, I can say that Kenshin is somewhat decent and atleast worth watching. But its not something I go "Awesome" at. Its average by most parts, but it doesnt really lack either.
Then Finally, if you want big letdowns, here's where I can really help. =)
- Vandread (Pirates in Space. Awesome isnt it? It is not)
- Hikaru no Go (Decent animation, bullshit story. Revolves around the strategy game "Go", there are two main characters and one of them kills himself because he loses to a cheater. Yeah, im hyped!)
- Slayers (I mean this is eyecandy. Except that the characters are terribly written, twists go out of control around every corner and the term "Plotkai" has a damn nest in this anime).

Naruto isn't that bad ... It's just that some other mangas are way better. If you want a manga with a lot of blood/darkness then read or watch Berzerk. Awesome drawing too.

Im not too much a fan of anime, but some animes just take it too far.
Japan is known for its fetish of rape and tentacles, and there are animes that just borded on porn atmosphere.
Take Vandread for instance. A few guys are caught up in a pirate raid and suddenly they're warped through a wormhole to an uncharted region of space. And it just happens that every "pirate", is a woman. And that each one has a giant rack.
So I figure its almost better to just read the manga. Since the animation centers too much on fanservice (not even One Piece is safe from it), I was wondering if someone knows a Manga, preferrably with a dark story.

Last was "Slam Dunk" Sports/comedy
I'll recommend Slam Dunk. Tough cocky/arrogant guy learns basketball as a complete beginner. Hilarious all way through. It's super old, but is so awesome.
